Are you thinking of doing an internship at Flipdish? Let me tell you about my experience:
How I got this work experience
After a long and intense search on LinkedIn, I came across a post from this company announcing an internship in the Irish sales department. I researched what Flipdish was and what product they offered, I found that it was a successful start-up and that just a year ago it had 10 employees and now has more than 80! So I applied immediately because where better to learn than in a start-up in full growth mode.
But it wasn’t that simple…
The day after I sent the application I received an email informing me that I had not been selected. But well, as they say if you want to achieve something: don’t give up. So I started looking for Flipdish employee profiles and found Irene Aldea, Account Manager for the Spanish Market, based in Dublin. I sent her a message showing her my enthusiasm and eagerness to work with them, and within two days I had already secured a stay in her apartment. After a few calls with Irene and then with Daniel Hernandez, the Country Manager of Spain working from Barcelona, we agreed to a 6 week internship in Dublin.
The first day!
Like every first day at work, school, gym, etc., you get nervous and even a little scared. To be honest, I didn’t have any of these two emotions after the charming treatment Irene and Daniel gave me. I just felt fortunate and eager to learn!
The first thing that surprised me was the area where Flipdish is located, a business park full of national and international companies such as Microsoft, Verizon and Salesforce, among others. Not to mention the transport options that this area has with the Luas and various bus routes all within a 5 minute walk which all connect you Dublin city centre in no time!
Irene welcomed me with a smile and showed me all the facilities in the office. Meeting rooms, a dining room with fridge, cookies, coffee, drinks…, small rooms to make individual calls, etc. It was very cool! But what I liked most was the kindness and friendliness with which I was received by my new colleagues around several platters of ‘Welcome pastries’. They do this for every new employee, meaning it happens nearly every week due to the rapid growth of the company!
I was briefed on how the following weeks would be organised and we discussed how I could contribute and what I would learn during this time. I was taken to my workplace, which to my great surprise was right in front of James McCarthy Co-founder and Head of Sales! Amazing, isn’t it? Having one of the founders of this company 2 meters from you and not in an office away from everyone.
Then I attended some meetings to help me to understand how each department worked and as unlikely as it may seem, I went for coffee with Conor McCarthy, the CEO of Flipdish!
I left the office with great anticipation to see what my next days would be like.
Course of the internship
Exactly on the Friday of my first week, the “End of month drinks” took place like every last Friday of every month. This consists of a small party organized by the company that starts with employee Knowledge Talks and drinks in the office and usually ends up in a typical Irish Pub. I found that this event is extremely useful for strengthening relationships between colleagues and not establishing unnecessary hierarchies that can often repress ideas and stunt successes.
Week after week, I felt more and more appreciated and fulfilled thanks to the good communication I had established with each partner. If I had a problem I could send a message via Slack to a person and they would make time to help me find a solution or teach me how to deal with it.
I’ve been wiring the Sales department, the Customer Success department and the Marketing department. It has been very interesting and gratifying to see how they took into account my opinions on every subject I dealt with. This really instilled in me the belief that in this company, every opinion counts.
I have been taught to use various software programs such as Pipedrive, WordPress (Thanks Ciarán!), Notion… Applications that are extremely useful and profitable in the business world.
Visit of the Head
In the middle of the internship, Daniel (Head of sales in Spain) visited for 3 days to connect with each person in his team and see how everything was going in the main office.
To celebrate we went for a drink in a very famous pub in the centre of Dublin.
Anything you want within 2 minutes on foot!
I wanted to add another paragraph to talk more about the location of this company.
As you can see in the image, the Beacon South quarter is full of all kinds of restaurants, gyms, pharmacy’s, supermarkets, etc…
Also, every Friday there is a food market with stalls selling cuisine from all over the world. I would highly recommend it, especially the Brazilian meat stalls.
I have spent the last 3 weeks with my team-mate and desk neighbour Joaquin Degener, Sales Manager. He has been teaching me the best tricks and sales strategies in the world of telesales. He is really great at what he does!
I would also like to thank Néstor Rodríguez, who works in Project Management & Data Entry, for caring for me like his little brother and making me feel at home!
My last day ☹
Sad but cheerful, it’s hard to explain
6 weeks later it’s time to say goodbye, but this is not goodbye, it’s see you later! 😎
The days have flown by (as they say: “Time Flies”) and I am sad to leave but happy for everything this experience has given to me. I have learned so much about professional life and was given continuous advice, suggestions, and so on. I feel more confident than ever heading back to Spain to finish my studies and see where my own career takes me.
I’d like to end with a piece of advice:
Other companies may be able to offer you financial compensation, accommodation, etc… but they will not be able to offer you the wonderful atmosphere of Flipdish!
So if you get the chance, don’t even think about it. Just go for it!
